Short description:

Department of Pediatrics has both inpatient and outpatient facilities .The inpatient department has three units (I, II, III), situated in ward -2 of main building and ward -25 of MCH building of hospital. Besides the general wards, it has got a Neonatal ward attached to ward -26 and a separate room for tetanus.
Total number of indoor admission averages about 35-40 patients per day and 1000-1200 patients per month.

Facilities:
1. The department is involved in lactation management center (jointly with department of Obs & Gynae) working daily.
2. Immunization centre activities working daily.
3. Follow up clinics
- Child Neurology every Wednesday
- Child Nephrology every Tuesday
- Child Pulmonology every Sunday

4. There is a departmental library which is equipped with recent text books and reference books (basic & clinical)

5. Outpatient service is supervised by one Resident Physician (Pediatrics) along with medical officers. About 5000-6000 children are taking services from OPD per month.

7. Neonatal unit
The neonatal unit (SCNU) has 16 beds with incubator(3incubator) facilities.But we have no ventillator.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
1. Undergraduate teaching : bedside tutorial and lecture classes are taken for 4th & 5th year MBBS students comprising of ward clinics,lecture classes and OPD clinics.

2.Post graduate courses:
--- DCH(Diploma in Child Health) -- No of students : 3
--- MD( Doctor of Medicine) --No of students : 3
Postgraduate training is accepted for FCPS,MCPS,MD

3.Dalily morning session for one hour where last 24 hours clinical events are discussed.

4. Departmental clinical meeting: Journal club is conducted weekly and death review is conducted monthly and clinical seminar monthly.
5. Hospital clinical meeting: Department of pediatrics present cases in clinical seminar two or three times in a year. In this seminar which is conducted every Thursday morning, professors of all the department including principal & director of hospital take active participation.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Current projects:
1)Study of Encephalitis - a multicentre study, jointly done in collaboration with ICDDRB,Dhaka and CDC,Atlanta,USA. Principal investigator: Dr Zahangir Hossein. Co-investigator: Dr Ekhlasur Rahman
